Om boka

Using the Mining Code of Svalbard as the foundation for a review of all exploration and mining activities in Svalbard through the last 100 years, this book seeks to visualize how juridical and geological factors are interwoven when prospects are evaluated and exploited.

Alv Orheim spent his first year (66/67) in Svalbard working in Mine No. 5 of Store Norske. Having completed economic geology studies at NTH (now NTNU - The Norwegian University of Science and Technology) in Trondheim, he returned to the company as a geologist in 1971, and held various positions related to coal availability and quality. From 1985 he was in charge of Statoil petroleum exploration in Svalbard. Apart from 3 years as the first manager of Svalbard Næringsutvikling (Svalbard Development Company) he stayed with Statoil till 2000, when he opened his own consultancy, GeoArktis.

Using the Mining Code of Svalbard as the foundation for a review of all exploration and mining activities in Svalbard through the last 100 years, this book seeks to visualize how juridical and geological factors are interwoven when prospects are evaluated and exploited. The text also makes comparisons to other legal systems in relation to exploration and exploitation of geological resources, and highlights some contradictory juridical issues of mainland Norway and the Norwegian territory of Svalbard. In 1906 the first successful mining enterprise started in Longyearbyen, and mining has been the only continuous activity. Consequently, it is the wish of the author and publisher that this book should form a valuable addition to other Svalbard literature.
